Did You Know These Two Things About Baldwin County

Here are two things you may not know about the Gulf Coast and our sugar white beaches:

Speaking of sugar, white sands, did you know its not sand at all. Its quartz! The tiny specs of sand are actually quartz that was washed down from the Appalachian Mountains about 20,000 years ago after the last ice age. Streams carried the quartz down from the mountains to the coast and deposited it into the Gulf of Mexico. Then, it was moved westward by a powerful current and eventually deposited it onto our shoreline. Waves ground the particles down into tiny sand-like spheres. The quartz sand crystal was grinded down to its terminal size, meaning that all the grains are almost exactly the same size and shape! So, next time your putting your toes in the sand, know that you're walking on crystals!

Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan Beach, and Orange Beach are located in Baldwin County, but did you know that Baldwin County is named after someone who's never been to our county or state! It was named after Abraham Baldwin, a native of Connecticut and signer of the US Constitution. Abraham was a senator from Georgia and founder of the University of Georgia. Many of Baldwin County's settlers were form the bulldog's state and decided to name the county after him!

So, did you know? Now, you do!
